Digital Nomad Programme in the Czech republic
The Ministry of Industry and Trade launched the Digital Nomad Programme during June 2023. This programme, which was introduced in response to the events associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, brings significant benefits to foreigners (particularly IT workers) and their families who wish to settle in the Czech Republic.
The Programme is open to foreigners employed by foreign companies who perform work in the Czech Republic on a long-term basis via telecommunications means (online) and foreigners who hold (or will hold) a trade licence granted by the Czech authorities. An indisputable advantage of the Programme is that it also applies to close family members (spouses, registered partners and children) of digital nomads. By enrolling in the Digital Nomads Programme, the foreigner and his/her family members are entitled to submit an application for a residence permit to the Czech Republic’s embassy abroad and to have this application processed within 45 days of its submission.
Although the Digital Nomads Programme so far only applies to citizens of eight countries (namely Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the USA and Taiwan), in our opinion this indicates a positive development in czech immigration law. We can only hope that this is the first step, which will be followed by further changes in the field of czech immigrtaion law and cross-border employment, which today’s times and the situation on the Czech labour market require.
